Thread veins (or spider veins) are very common and a frequent cause cosmetic concern. Thread veins are actually smaller than varicose veins but are more noticeable as they lie very close to the skin. They are rarely a cause for medical concern but sometimes can cause itch or minor aches and pains.

Up to half of patients develop thread veins because of problems in larger veins underneath the skin. The most common cause of poor results after treatment is the failure to identify and treat these larger veins when they are present.

Microsclerotherapy is the most effect form of treatment for thread veins. Small injections of a very dilute solution are injected into the veins. This causes the thread veins to close off and fade away over a few weeks. Thread veins are a normal part of the healing response and a proportion of veins will heal themselves after injection. A course of between two and four treatments is usually recommended.

Our surgeons are widely regarded as experts in managing all types of varicose veins including thread veins. They perform a detailed ultrasound system of the underlying veins and plan a treatment course with all patients. Treatment sessions are performed in the outpatient rooms and last 30 minutes. Normal activity can be resumed immediately after treatment concludes.

Final results take 2-3 months to develop, further treatments can continue 2-4 weeks after the first visit.
