Alastair Lewis FRCS
Mr Alastair Lewis was appointed a consultant vascular surgeon in 2007. He now works full time in private practice specialising exclusively in the management of venous disease. He is widely regarded as an authority on the non-surgical management of all types of varicose veins.
Mr Alastair Lewis graduated from Queens University Belfast in 1995 with undergraduate degrees in both Physiology and Medicine. He completed surgical training in Belfast before spending a year as the Endovascular Fellow in Saint James Hospital, Dublin in 2007. He was appointed as a consultant vascular surgeon to the Southern Health and Social Care Trust in 2007 and played a central role establishing the regional varicose vein service in Northern Ireland. He led the introduction of keyhole the VNUS Closurefast thermal ablation procedure in the Southern, Western and Northen Trusts between 2008 and 2010. This remains the main form of thermal ablation performed in Belfast hospitals. He subsequently led the role out of Endovenous Laser in the Southern Trust in 2015 and played a central role in the development of the regional Venous Service for Northern Ireland in 2018.
Mr Lewis now works in full time private practice mainly based in Belfast and Dublin. He is regarded widely as an expert in the non-surgical management of varicose veins and thread veins with all forms of thermal ablation of veins, foam sclerotherapy and microsclerotherapy. He is fully trained and accredited in venous ultrasound.
Mr Lewis enjoys a national reputation as an authority in the investigation and management of all aspects of venous disease. He has been invited to speak on the expert management of varicose veins at the Royal Society of Medicine’s Venous Forum, The British Association of Sclerotherapists and Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland meetings on a regular basis in recent years. He has been a member of the board of The British Association of Sclerotherapists since 2021. He holds the prestigious Diploma in Venous Disease from the European Society of Phlebology.
Mr Lewis offers keyhole treatments for thread veins, varicose veins and complications of chronic venous insufficiency. Treatments offered include Endovenous laser ablation, foam sclerotherapy, microsclerotherapy and non-injectable treatment of facial veins. He has significant experience in the treatment of veins on the face, chest, hands, feet and in the management of pelvic venous disorders.
