Inguinal hernia repair under local anaesthetic with sedation is an outpatient procedure necessitating most patients spending 3 hours in the clinic. This approach is particularly suitable for older patients with other medical conditions. Patients that are carrying a lot of weight or who have large irreducible hernias may need a general anaesthetic which we can generally accommodate.
Following surgery, some bruising and swelling is to be expected, patients are likely to require painkillers for 3-4 days. They must not drive a car for 7 days.
Patients may be able to return to a desk job in 7-14 days, heavier work may require a longer period of recovery; 4-6 weeks.
