The commonest site for a hernia is the groin, other sites are around the umbilicus or through previous abdominal wounds. The majority of groin hernias can be fixed under local anaesthetic as a day case in Fitzwilliam Clinic. Repair of some more complex hernias requires inpatient care, usually laparoscopic or keyhole surgery.

All surgery is performed by experts with many years experience in hernia surgery both open techniques and laparoscopic or keyhole surgery. All hernias are repaired with modern techniques using mesh to strenghten the repair with a low risk of recurrence. Day case repair of a groin hernia usually necessitates spending around 3 hours in the clinic after which patients can go home. Pain killers may be required for a few days and most normal activities resumed over 1-2 weeks.
