Facelift/Necklift

Our consultant Mr Michael McBride FRCS (Plast) describes the facelift procedures available at Fitzwilliam Clinic.

As we age, several changes occur on our face. The skin becomes thinner, drier, less elastic, and looser / redundant.  The subcutaneous fat loses volumes and descends / displaces with gravity.  The supporting fascia (SMAS) and retaining ligaments become weakened, attenuated, and stretch.  The muscles thin and the facial bone resorbs contributing to the volume loss.  This can give the appearance of:

  • Globally – Irregularities in skin colour / pigment / sun damage and sagging, loose skin, skin creases / wrinkles (rhytids).  Rhytids can be fine, deep, and present at rest (static) or with face movement (dynamic).
  • Mid face – Sagging appearance of your cheeks (malar), deepening of the fold of skin from the side of your nose to the corner of your mouth (nasolabial fold), from the mouth corner to the chin (marionette lines).
  • Lower face and neck – Excess sagging skin and subcutaneous fat at the lower jawline (jowls) and neck (Double chin, loss of neck definition) – which can extend to the lower neck and chest.  The neck may also have soft or hard muscle (platysma) bands.

A face and / or neck lift is a surgical procedure that lifts the deeper tissues of the face and neck back to a more youthful and proportionate position – helping a patient ‘turn back the clock’ looking like a fresher version of his or herself.  A composite deep plane face and neck lift facilitates release of the deep facial and neck retaining anchor points / ligaments – allowing the surgeon to access the central aged portion of the face and neck.  The face and neck are then free to be lifted to a proportionate contoured position, unhindered by tension and in a natural vector.  This can be combined when suitably indicted with deep central neck reduction and / or facial volume augmentation (facial fat reduction and / or fat transfer).
