About Permanent laser hair Reduction

Jenny Flanagan

Change your life with permanent hair reduction

Effectively and safely eliminate unwanted hair for ever!!!

Both Men and women can now have the benefits of a hair free life using the most trusted gold standard in laser technology

How does laser work?

At The Fitzwilliam Clinic we use the, Alexandrite Class 4 medical laser from Cynosure. This operates at a wavelength of 755nm and has FDA approval.

The laser emits a controlled beam of light that is delivered into the skin, and is absorbed by the Melanin (colour) within the hair. The light energy is then converted to heat, causing thermal damage to the hair follicle. This process permanently disables the cells that are responsible for hair growth whilst leaving the surrounding skin unaffected.

To ensure your treatments are as comfortable as possible we use the ‘smart cool’ chilled air system; the future of skin comfort during laser, a continuous flow of cold air which has an anaesthetising effect on the skin.

How long do treatments take?

Session times can vary depending on the body area being treated. Your stay can be as short as a few minutes or as long as three hours.

How many treatments will i need?

Most clients notice a significant reduction in hair even after one treatment however the total number of treatments required often depends on a number of factors, which include hair colour, density, age and hormonal levels. The best results are generally seen on those with terminal dark hair and pale skin. Laser is a progressive therapy where multiple treatments are necessary. The majority of clients are satisfied with results after 6 to 8 sessions.

What are the treatment intervals?

Usually 4 -6 weeks are allocated for the first few treatments on the facial areas to begin with then the intervals are up to three months or longer.  The intervals between treatments are usually longer with the body areas, initially ranging from 6 to 8 weeks to 3 to 6 months. This can vary due to hair growth in different areas and individual circumstances.

What does the treatment feel like?

You may experience a slight prickly or lightly stinging sensation, like the snap of a rubber band against the skin. It depends greatly on the individuals’ sensitivity levels, but most people tolerate the treatment very easily with the smart cool chilled air system treatment.

Who is suitable?

If you have dark hair and light skin, you are most suitable for laser therapy. Unfortunately the treatment of white, grey, blonde and very fine hair is ineffective due to the lack of melanin (colour) present in the hair.

My pre-treatment care

TANNED SKIN CAN NOT BE TREATED Avoid Sun Exposure, Tanning beds & Solariums for at least 4 to 6 weeks before Laser Treatment. If you have any trace of a tan your treatment will be postponed, as this greatly increases the risk of pigmentation of the skin.

The use of SPF30+ must be used prior to and throughout your treatment. Please inform your Laser Specialist of any planned holidays to ensure your appointments are booked appropriately.

Ensure the treatment area is free from any false tanning products, perfumes and body lotions on the day of treatment. Do not use AHA’s, BHA’s or Retin A products for one week prior to treatment.

Wear appropriate clothing if applicable to the area being treated. When treating the bikini area, a white G-string is ideal.

The hair on the treatment area should be pre shaven or cut 1- 3 days before your appointment (for best results we need the hair to be flush with the skin). This does not apply to female facial hair (we will trim at the time of treatment).

If the hair is fine and patchy we need a certain length present, this will be assessed on an individual basis. For you first visit it is advisable to leave the hair with some length as this allows the laser specialist to assess the treatment area and hair type.

No Waxing or Tweezing of the hair prior to or between treatments. Instead the hair may be cut or shaven as often as required, this does not interfere with the hair growth cycles nor does it mean hair will grow back thicker

Ensure to alert your laser specialist to any changes in medication (including herbal) and or medical conditions. If you have a history of perioral herpes (cold sores) prophylactic antiviral therapy may be started 3-4 days before treatment and continued for 1 week after treatment.

If you wish to use Anaesthetic Cream EMLA 5% is advised. It is a topical anaesthetic (numbing) cream. It is applied to clean, shaved or trimmed skin. A generous amount is rubbed in and then extra patted on.  This area is then firmly wrapped in glad wrap to encourage penetration into the skin and to avoid loss of cream on clothing etc. For best results leave on for 1 – 1 ½ hour.

My post treatment care

Immediately following treatment the skin can be red, feel warm with some localised swelling, discomfort, bruising and some discolouration. This usually dissipates within a few hours but can last up to ten days. If any crusting or scabbing should occur, keep the area moist and let it fall off on its own accord.

During the healing phase, the area must be treated delicately. Do not rub, scratch, or pick the skin. Pat the area dry after a shower and do not shave if swollen.

The use of cool compressions and or Aloe Vera gel is recommended to soothe and comfort the area if required.

All heat treatments such as hot showers/baths, steam rooms/saunas; hairdryers etc. should be avoided on the treatment site for the next 24 to 48 hours.

The hair will shed naturally and can take anywhere from 5-21 days after treatment. This gives the appearance of new hair growth.  This is NOT new hair growth. You may gently exfoliate the area to remove this shedding hair.

The hair on the treatment area may be shaven or cut as often as needed, this will not affect hair growth or the treatment progress. Waxing, epilating, plucking and electrolysis are NOT advised whilst having laser hair reduction treatments. These processes remove hair from the follicles leaving the laser with no target. Treatment would be non-effective.

It cannot be stressed enough the importance of using a broad spectrum sunblock (SPF 30+) between treatment procedures, and avoiding sun exposure as much as possible.

If exposed to the sun, keep the treatment covered to keep the area as pale as possible.

This reduces the chance of hyperpigmentation (dark spots) and use SPF+30 sun cream as recommended

False tanning products may be used between laser appointments; however there must be no trace of any tanning products on the skin immediately prior to your appointment.
